This accomplishment was executed by 5th and 6th graders who were part of an afterschool leadership program. The students’ teacher reached out to Keep Phoenix Beautiful Education Director Evelyn Brumfield and together they worked on this service learning project. After gathering data, creating a strategy, involving classmates and faculty, the school is proud to be litter-free!
The Litter-Free Places initiative was critical in outlining the process used in Alta Vista. The students were able to spearhead the elimination of litter on their campus using the methodology that measures school campus litter with the goal of ending it by designing and conducting individualized school litter reduction plans.
“I am thrilled with how these students came together to solve this problem,” says Brumfield. “We are honored that Alta Vista is the first school in Arizona to go through this process, and the leadership at the school is eager to keep their school beautiful.”
“Keep America Beautiful is proud of Alta Vista Elementary and their dedication to making their school a litter-free establishment,” said Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Helen Lowman “We hope this school inspires others to take action to end litter and to join Keep America Beautiful in its mission to create a cleaner, greener and more beautiful America.”
