The Hefty® EnergyBag® program has proven that hard-to-recycle plastics can be collected curbside and converted into valuable new resources. This groundbreaking concept can be leveraged by communities, municipalities, local materials recovery facilities, nonprofits, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and brand owners to expand the initiative on a national level. Building on the success of the2017 Keep America Beautiful grant program #1, as well as addional funding for two additional $100,000 grant programs in 2018, Dow is offering an additional funding for a fourth grant cycle in up to $125,000 for 2019.

How Applications Are Evaluated
The grant program typically receives a large number of applications and, as a result, is very competitive. All submissions will be reviewed based on the general criteria outlined below, and specifically on the responses to the questions provided in the Grant Application around the seven (7) categories of: (1) Community, (2) Haulers, (3) Material Recovery Facilities (MRF), Local Collaborators, (5) Local NGO and Environmental Groups, (6) End Markets, and (7) Description of Proposed Program. Top entries will be further contacted for additional discussions and possible site visits once the grant application period closes on July 12, 2019.
A webinar is available on May 9 to help organizations better understand the program and how to prepare a quality grant application for consideration.
- Well-organized proposal: Application responses should concisely and clearly address all questions below.
- Planning and organization: Provide a well thought out implementation strategy noting how the program will be managed to ensure ultimate success.
- Tracking performance metrics: Detailed tracking and reporting plans referring to the number and weight of Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags collected over time
In addition to these criteria, preference will be given to applicants that submit a completed Letter of Collaboration, where key local stakeholders and sponsors indicate their support to help implement and possibly fund the local Hefty® EnergyBag® program.
