The second annual anti-cigarette butt litter campaign launches along Georgia coastal communities.

Keep Golden Isles Beautiful (KGIB) along with several partners in Georgia are working to help eliminate the nation’s – and the community’s – most littered item, cigarette butts. The campaign called ‘Georgia’s Coast is Not an Ashtray’ is underway in its second year, encouraging people to use appropriate receptacles and portable ashtrays instead of flicking cigarette butts on the ground.

“We want people to properly dispose of their cigarette butts. Since we’re a coastal city, with so many water resources, it’s imperative that we keep cigarette butts out of the marshes and oceans,” Lea King-Badyna, executive director of KGIB said in an article about the campaign.

The campaign is running through the summer, and will include placing new receptacles, public service announcements, social media promotion, educational outreach, pocket/ car ashtray distribution, and drink coaster outreach. KGIB is set to distribute 8,000 coasters printed with messaging to local businesses and restaurants.

Among the partners are Keep McIntosh County Beautiful, Keep Camden County Beautiful, Keep Liberty County Beautiful and Keep Savannah Beautiful.

KGIB received a $10,000 grant through the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program to execute the project.
