Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Launches Native Plant Nursery
For nearly a decade, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) has focused on using native plants that will provide more benefits to local wildlife, some of which depend on single species of plants.
In 2020, KIB started a native plant nursery, making 20 species available for sale to the public and for use in KIB projects. With low startup costs and a lot of leniency in size and scale, the project broke down barriers of cost and inconvenience for consumers and created a teaching tool for people interested in starting native plants at home. Using natural lighting and climate to produce native plants, it reduces the need for artificial lighting or greenhouses.
“For years, we’ve spread messages on the importance of the ecological function of plants native to our area,” said Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “Now, when residents ask where they can buy native plants, we can answer with confidence that they can be purchased right here in the city.”
This project represents an opportunity to teach people about the importance and role of native plants within our ecosystems and give people easy ways to take action. Lean more about the nursery here.
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is a 2020 Keep America Beautiful National Award Winner for this project.
