Downtown workers grabbing a quick bite on the go will no longer have to choose between throwing their empty water bottles in the trash or lugging them back to the office, or home, to recycle.

Des Moines is expanding recycling options for people living and working downtown by installing 50 blue recycling bins to collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Each recycling bin is attached to an existing city trash can.

The recycling bins are expected to become a welcome addition for the downtown lunch crowd.

The Western Gateway bins, which are larger than those in East Village, were given to Operation Downtown by the Coca-Cola/Keep America Beautiful Recycling Bin Grant Program.
