3,000+ Flower Seed Packets Given Away for Community Pollinator Gardens
Since Georgia’s shelter-in-place directive, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful (KGIB) has promoted pollinator garden creation, to not only increase the number of gardens, but to also encourage family interaction and outdoor activity. KGIB decided to jump start garden creation by providing FREE Flower Seed Grab Bags. Promoted via social media/news articles and sensitive to local social distancing mandates, interested residents retrieved their labeled bag from the front steps of Brunswick’s Old City Hall. The “Grab Bag” part of the project added an air of mystery and suspense, as participants had no idea the number or type of flower seed packets they would receive. A resounding success, 335 Grab Bags were given away totaling 3,527 flower seed packets (seeds made possible by a Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation/The Home Depot partnership). “By sharing the seeds in this manner, we were able to provide community members with a way to Make A Difference while basically stuck at home – by planting pollinator gardens,” said KGIB executive director Lea King-Badyna. “We are thrilled with the excitement this outreach effort generated and are eagerly anticipating participant photo submissions showcasing the new pollinator gardens.” The Great Flower Seed Grab Bag Giveaway project lifted spirits, empowered residents to make a difference, provided quality outdoor family time, and will ultimately benefit our pollinator friends by increased flower gardens.
