Mississippi Groups, Residents Join Spring Cleanup

On March 20, 2021, volunteers from all over New Albany and Union County, Mississippi converged for a spring cleanup event. The Union County Master Gardeners, Girl Scout Troop 20278, the New Albany Fire Department, ITG Ministries, the Union County Library, church youth groups, and aldermen turned out to help, as did many individuals and families. They received trash bags and gloves as well as street assignments if they didn’t already have an area in mind. There were several groups around town that started their cleanup efforts at other sites, including the historic B.F. Ford Elementary building and at the highway exits. For three hours, the cleanup continued. At 10:00 a.m., some volunteers attended an open community meeting at Alabama Park – New Albany Main Street opened the floor to citizens regarding plans for refurbishing the park with new playground equipment, lighting, landscaping, and perhaps a walking track for parents. The New Albany Fire Department was on hand to help load up full trash bags and take them back to the garbage truck provided by the street department, at the lower library parking lot. By the end of the event, the truck was full and many volunteers reconvened at the Union County Heritage Museum for lunch, graciously provided by the Historic Northside District Garden Club. More here.
