The Right Receptacle in the Right Place

After years of daily cleanups of the parking lot at a local temp force hiring firm, Keep Alachua County Beautiful received permission to mount cigarette butt receptacles on two walls. Previously, the agency elected to use a traditional ground-mounted receptacle outside of their door. During the hours when the temp force agency was closed, the downtown homeless population in Gainesville would raid this container for butts to harvest tobacco to re-roll and smoke or smoke the remaining tobacco from the already used filter. The locking wall-mounted receptacles put an end to this practice. Besides beautifying this area, the inaccessibility of previously smoked butts will mean these butts will no longer contribute to mouth disease.
