WHAT MAKES MY PLASTIC BOTTLE SO RECYCLABLE?

Most beverage bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). You can identify this material by the number 1 in the recycling logo.

This type of plastic is very common, and easy to recycle. It’s the most recyclable plastic in the US and almost every recycling facility can process PET.

At close to 30%

PET is one of the most widely recycled materials in America.

So What?

This plastic is really easy to make into new things, including new bottles, so there is a market for this type of recycled plastic. (rPET).

Many companies want more and more post-consumer waste to be rescued from landfill and given a chance to become something new again.

WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT?

By using post-consumer materials to make new things, we reduce the need for natural resources creating a loop, or circular economy.

PET and HDPE are the most common materials for bottles and jars, representing

97%

of the total market.

What Can I Do?

1. Recycle like everyone is watching!

2. Empty plastic bottles should ALWAYS go in the recycling bin with the cap on.

3. Buy things made from recycled material, completing the loop!

I WANT TO BE REYCYCLED!

Imagine a plastic bottle that dreams of becoming a pair of jeans, a steel food can that wants to breeze by as a bicycle, or a shampoo bottle that continues to bring smiles to the beautiful faces of children as a hairbrush. Would you help to make their dreams come true if you could?

Each and every day we all have the choice to recycle. When we place our everyday items in the appropriate recycling bin we’re “giving our garbage another life” – a chance at its dream of becoming something new.

Keep America Beautiful and the Ad Council partnered on the award-winning “I Want To Be Recycled” public service advertising (PSA) and awareness campaign. The bi-lingual, multi-media campaign cleverly shows the viewer that an individual can “Give Your Garbage Another Life” by choosing to recycle.
