Keep Golden Isles Beautiful: Marsh Madness 2020

Georgia is home to roughly 1/3 of the Eastern Seaboard’s remaining salt marsh. Known as the “ocean’s nursery,” this valuable natural resource not only provides shelter for young marine life, it also plays a vital role in storm energy absorption. During Keep America Beautiful’s annual Great American Cleanup, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful (KGIB) hosts “Marsh Madness” each March, focusing on salt marsh and salt marsh area cleanups. In 2020 a lofty goal of 20 such cleanups in one month was set. Even with a world-wide pandemic, 17 cleanups were held in March, with the remaining taking place in the summer. Volunteers worked underneath bridges, at fishing piers and boat ramps, in ocean side parks and down in the salt marsh itself. In the end, Marsh Madness surpassed its original goal with impressive numbers: a total of 234 volunteers worked 347 hours at 24 salt marsh and marsh area cleanups, removing 7.11 TONS of trash, including 154.5 tires. In the Golden Isles of Georgia, it is nobody’s “job” to remove marsh trash (GA Department of Natural Resources removes derelict vessels). Without the effort of KGIB volunteers, 7.11 tons of trash, including 154.5 tires, would still remain in the beautiful and vital Marshes of Glynn. Marsh Madness participants, site leaders, community partners and sponsors provided a sorely needed community service  and made a positive impact in Georgia coastal resource health.

Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful and the nine municipalities it represents came up with a way to raise the spirits of residents receiving meals or other food donations. The deliveries include a flower to brighten up a recipient’s day thanks to the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation.

The foundation made a donation of artificial flowers and decorations to KBVB. Initially, 10 schools were going to use the flowers to make displays for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Those plans changed, however, when the coronavirus hit.

KBVB Director Donna Kaehler and municipal officials decided to include the decorations with meals and food packages distributed in the Blackstone Valley to bring a hope during this difficult time. More than six pallets of flowers have been delivered.

Officials are using the flowers with their Meals on Wheels programs, for programs at senior centers, and for the food pantry programs.

“While KBVB initially had a different program in mind for these artificial flowers, I believe it turned into a more meaningful program and sends a little hope during this time,” said Kaehler.

Serving over 3,400 meals in their communities weekly, our Blackstone Valley communities are supplying such an important service.

Mayor James Diossa of Central Falls helps KBVB deliver a message of hope.

The installation depicts characters of various shapes and sizes dancing in an Oklahoma thunderstorm. “Birdwatching OKC Lightning Thunder Dance Party” by Joe Slack is a colorful combination of paint and metal work that is unique and reflective of the surrounding community. The project spans two blocks. Joe and his assistant put 1,800 hours into this project between sketching, measuring, cutting, installing, and painting. These First Responders are Rescuing Food

As farms and restaurants close, organizers are mobilizing to make sure the food left behind gets to where it’s needed most.

In the best of times, the United States wastes 40 percent of its food annually, amounting to about 63 million tons. The collective response to the coronavirus pandemic, from panic buying at grocery stores to restaurant closures, is bound to inflate that percentage, food loss experts say, at a time when food insecurity is on the rise.

The biggest source of food waste in America is households, where produce wilts, milk spoils and leftovers lurk at the back of the fridge until they are tossed. Now, anxious consumers who have been hoarding food may discover there’s no way they can eat everything they’ve bought. Says Frank Franciosi, of the U.S. Composting Council, “We may see municipal curbside collection of food waste go up as more people eat in or take out.”

At Keep Charlotte Beautiful (KCB), we love community greening. When the Wintergarden Church approached us to build a community garden, we were in! Within 18 months, the garden has 16 raised beds and four that are handicapped accessible. The project has a food bank, community garden, and soon-to-be food forest that are going to help us to reduce food insecurity in Charlotte County, Florida, by providing the opportunity to learn more about growing your own food, nutrition, cooking, and budgeting.

This project has had many community partners, including Home Depot, Raymond Building Supply, and Lowe’s. We were also fortunate to receive a grant of a VISTA Volunteer to assist in capacity building.

Keep America Beautiful® is bringing America’s leading volunteer-driven community improvement program, the Great American Cleanup®, directly to people’s homes with the #GivingTuesdayNow kickoff of the Great American Cleanup Virtual Experience. For more than 20 years, Keep America Beautiful has brought communities together for the Great American Cleanup, which normally takes place during the spring months. This year, the Great American Cleanup was postponed to avoid the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The Great American Cleanup Virtual Experience, a feature of DoBeautifulThings.org, is a “virtual park” that people can interact with and beautify through virtual experiences. As users earn points by completing activities, walking/running, or fundraising, the virtual park will be cleaned and beautified. Participants will help identify where a Keep America Beautiful community beautification project will take place when the fundraising target is reached, and once volunteers are able to safely re-engage with one another. Promoted via social media/news articles and sensitive to local social distancing mandates, interested residents retrieved their labeled bag from the front steps of Brunswick’s Old City Hall. The “Grab Bag” part of the project added an air of mystery and suspense, as participants had no idea the number or type of flower seed packets they would receive. A resounding success, 335 Grab Bags were given away totaling 3,527 flower seed packets (seeds made possible by a Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation/The Home Depot partnership). “By sharing the seeds in this manner, we were able to provide community members with a way to Make A Difference while basically stuck at home – by planting pollinator gardens,” said KGIB executive director Lea King-Badyna. “We are thrilled with the excitement this outreach effort generated and are eagerly anticipating participant photo submissions showcasing the new pollinator gardens.” The Great Flower Seed Grab Bag Giveaway project lifted spirits, empowered residents to make a difference, provided quality outdoor family time, and will ultimately benefit our pollinator friends by increased flower gardens.

Welcome to the Tiger Prairie at Katy High School

After two years of cover crops, soil remediation, and native seed planting, the Tiger Prairie is born! The Tiger Prairie is a restoration and outdoor classroom project at Katy High School in Katy, Texas. This one-acre area was originally turf grass but is now in the beginning stages of becoming a native Texas coastal prairie. Additionally, the Tiger Prairie helps with flood mitigation and serves as a model of conservation best-practices, helping our community reap the many benefits gained by restoring native green spaces in urban communities. “Being Earth-Friendly While Staying Home” by Shreveport Green Neighborhood & Education Program

Shreveport Green’s Neighborhood & Education Program thanked citizens (as reported in the Shreveport Times) for conducting earth-friendly activities while adhering to the stay-at-home order during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shreveport joined millions of Americans in observing the 50th Earth Day celebration on April 22 from home. Citizens sent in photos showing their appreciation for the planet at home by: showing themselves recycling, planting flowers, conserving water, children drawing Earth Day pictures, catching rain water, and other environmental protection activities. We were delighted to celebrate Earth Day virtually. We wanted to keep citizens interested in protected the planet during this difficult time. Those photos have been posted on Shreveport Green’s Facebook page.

“We know it’s a challenge keeping children engaged in fun and educational activities at home, so we want to provide parents with fun and informative worksheets that teach children a variety of environmental lessons,” says Casaundra Calloway, Neighborhood & Education Program Coordinator,  Shreveport Green. “This is why we provided worksheets from Rocksey’s Toolbox, a kit containing activity sheets created by Keep Louisiana Beautiful, because we wanted to teach children about litter, recycling, water pollution, composting and more environmental issues.”

Garden Educators Make an Impact in OKC

OKC Harvest is OKC Beautiful’s school garden program. OKC Beautiful discovered that school gardens most often succeed where there is a dedicated gardener in charge of maintenance who also coordinates with teachers to provide hands-on lessons to students. Thanks to a capacity-building grant from Sprouts, OKC Beautiful was able to launch a garden educator pilot program to demonstrate this model at two carefully chosen elementary schools. School garden lessons are focused on exposing children to science and math, language arts, and social studies within the contest of a natural environment where they grow, harvest, and eat healthy foods. Already the results are compelling. One teachers says of the garden program, “It makes them so happy to see that something they planted can provide food for everyone. They become connected to our community. It is an experience they will remember the rest of their lives.”

Special events are being canceled across the country due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, leaving florists and nurseries with a surplus of fresh-cut flowers. Rather than letting the flowers go to waste, members of the floral community are spreading joy and finding creative ways to re-purpose the blooms. A Utah nursery that was stuck with hundreds of thousands of potted flowers is giving away as many of the plants as it can — with the help of volunteers and United Parcel Service (UPS) drivers. Read more here. Meanwhile, in Virginia, a floral design company called Sweet Root Village set up a drive-thru flower show as a fundraiser for charity. Read more here.

Month-Long Truckee River Celebration

For the last three years in the Truckee Meadows region of Northern Nevada, One Truckee River has hosted a month-long celebration of the Truckee River in May. The organization gets thousands of people out enjoying the river, learning about how valuable to watershed is, and taking action to protect it. In light if everything going on in the world, the team has done an incredible job converting the entire month of events into an online format. One of the new focuses of the celebration is showing the community the value and healing power of spending time in nature, especially when it’s along the river. You can see all their awesome work at onetruckeeriver.org and now you can participate from anywhere, not just in local Keep America Beautiful affiliate Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful’s little nook in Northern Nevada.

Balloon Litter Becomes Art

An affiliate of Keep America Beautiful shows how teamwork in Virginia turns marine litter into art

More than 11,000 littered balloons and ribbons were collected by researchers as part of Clean Virginia Waterway’s five-year study on remote beaches in Virginia. A public art project was created to raise awareness about the perils of marine debris, with the focus on balloons. People often don’t realize that balloons and their ribbons rank in the top three most deadly forms of marine debris.

A welding instructor and high school seniors constructed the frames of a turtle and a butterfly. Students, parents, and volunteers met at a local art gallery to sort the littered balloons by colors, and fill the metal sculpture frames. The beautiful butterfly and sea turtle sculptures have been on display for public enjoyment and education.

“Balloon-released litter is so preventable,” said Mike Baum, executive director of Keep Virginia Beautiful. “People just need to stop and think of other ways to celebrate without releasing balloons into the air.”

Ridgeland Wildflower Trails of Mississippi

Keep Ridgeland Beautiful’s Earth Day project is turning an underutilized space into a pocket park with its main feature being the Keep Mississippi Beautiful Wildflower Trails of Mississippi. The lot is located just off the Interstate 55N and will be a “welcome to Ridgeland” feature for visitors and citizens. The park will have a walking trail through the wildflower field and be surrounded by flowerbeds with assorted plants and trees. Throughout the trail, there will be iron sculptures created by a local artist, Harry Day, and park benches for visitors to take photos and to enjoy our beautiful Earth’s environment with trees, plants, and flowers.

Keep Ridgeland Beautiful Executive Director Jan Richardson says, “We hope visitors and residents will enjoy this beautiful and welcoming natural area at this gateway to our city. It will have a walking trail and be a wonderful spot to take portraits and family photos. We are grateful for Tim Taylor for taking this field from drab to fabulous and for support from our Parks and Recreation Department. We are so thankful to Keep Mississippi Beautiful and their support and excitement about the project. Come see our pollinators at work this summer.”

Keep Mississippi Executive Director Sarah Kountouris added, “With Earth Day a little different this year and seeing the amazing work Keep Ridgeland Beautiful is doing with their Wildflower Trail  — this will help make everyday EARTH DAY.”

Communal singing brought people together in Lebanon and Israel.

There is no shortage of goodness, kindness, and heroism as the world battles the novel coronavirus.

For many of us, the world seems pretty dark and hopeless right now. We are glued to our screens, hoping for good news, but more often than not we end up reading reports that fill us with anger, fear, or a sense of helplessness. Still, countless acts of goodness, kindness, and heroism are taking place all over as the world battles COVID-19. Of course, much of it is going on behind the closed doors of hospitals and homes, anonymous and unsung. But some of it is happening for all of the world to see. We’ve rounded up some of the good news as a reminder that, amid the darkness, people are still out there loving and caring for each other.

NEW YORK — Ovations are on pause in the theaters and concert halls and stadiums of this city. But they haven’t ceased. They’ve just moved into the streets.

Like clockwork, they happen, every evening at 7. Up and down Manhattan — and probably the Bronx and Staten Island, too — cheers ring out from apartment towers and brownstones, along with the sounds of rhythmic chants, applause and whistles.
