Keep Philadelphia Beautiful (KPB) and Fairmount CDC (Community Development Corporation), a 501(c)3 nonprofit located in Philadelphia’s Art Museum District, partnered to purchase, build and disperse individual planters along Fairmount Avenue — utilizing a local small business to procure supplies.

The nonprofits engaged more than 30 volunteers on the morning of Aug. 5 to construct and deliver approximately 42 planters to property owners along the Fairmount Avenue commercial corridor. Additionally, volunteers had the chance to explore the community garden space behind historic Eastern State Penitentiary, the staging area for the initiative.

“We hope this project will create an additional touchpoint between Fairmount CDC and the community they serve,” said Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Executive Director Michelle Feldman. “The project adds additional and cohesive greening on the Avenue, and will encourage additional greening investment from property owners.”

Feldman commented that the one of the most creative aspects of the day was the process of designing tags for each planter inscribed with “I <3 Fairmount!” Volunteers made each tag to their own aesthetic, so while planters along the Avenue are clearly part of a coordinated project, each one is unique as well.
