Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful joins Georgia communities in recycling Christmas trees

Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful (KRFB), located in Rome, Georgia, held its annual “Bring One for the Chipper” event on Jan. 15.  The Christmas tree recycling event was one of many held across the state as an initiative of Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation after the holiday season to give Christmas trees a new purpose.

This year, KRFB collected over 175 trees for recycling. Since its inception, the program in Georgia has recycled an estimated 6 million Christmas trees. The program transforms the trees into mulch for playgrounds, city and county landscaping projects, and individual homes. In addition, local fishermen pick up trees to put in lakes to create fish habitats.

“We do this event every year and have a wonderful response each year from the community!” said Emma Wells, executive director of Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful. “It is a tradition!”

KRFB also handed out free seeds and seedlings to participants who recycled their trees.
