Keep Lake Beautiful Volunteer Rachel Clark Receives Outstanding Youth Champion Award from Keep Florida Beautiful

Keep Lake Beautiful (KLB) leads the way to a cleaner and more beautiful Lake County, Florida, by engaging citizens and encouraging community participation. The Keep America Beautiful affiliate, based on Tavares, Florida, coordinates and participates in community cleanups, roadside litter pickups, neighborhood and school beautification events, tree planting initiatives, and household hazardous waste collection events.

Recent Mount Dora High School graduate Rachel Clark exemplifies KLB’s mission. Her numerous volunteer efforts included coordinating a lake cleanup with her high school classmates in conjunction with KLB; planting of 50 cypress trees on the campus of Lake-Sumter State College; participating in lakeshore restorations with the Lake County Adopt-a-Lake Program; and marking stormwater drains, among many other initiatives. Rachel has even guest-hosted a radio show about litter prevention.

“No matter where or who you are, the environment affects us all,” Clark said. “Volunteering is so rewarding and fun. I think everybody has what it takes to make a big difference in the world. Little things like saving electricity, turning off the water when you brush your teeth and recycling are really easy to do.”

Because of her significant involvement with KLB, Rachel earned the Outstanding Youth Champion Award from Keep Florida Beautiful. The award recognizes an engaged young person who demonstrates leadership in prompting behavior change on litter prevention, recycling and beautification. Rachel received her award from Will Dawson, coordinator of KLB, who stated, “We are lucky to have such a dedicated teen volunteer engaging her peers about the importance of protecting our natural resources, and we are thrilled that she is being honored for her great work.”

Rachel hopes to be at the forefront of environmental change after completing a political science degree at Lake-Sumter State College.
