“A Walk Through New Mexico”

Keep Las Cruces Beautiful Leads Community Effort to

Revitalize I-25 Tunnel

Volunteers work together on painting a vibrant mural inside the Triviz I-25 tunnel.

(April 3, 2024) – Keep America Beautiful is pleased to spotlight the continued commitment of Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB) and the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) as they collaborate to create a mural inside the Triviz I-25 tunnel in New Mexico. This tunnel serves as a pathway for the Outlet Channel Trail, offering a scenic route for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging, and biking while also serving as essential infrastructure for managing stormwater runoff and preventing flooding in the area.

Despite facing vandalism shortly after its completion in 2020, KLCB remains steadfast in their commitment to maintaining and enhancing the mural. In January 2024, the Art Board approved a new project to enrich the tunnel with 11 new pieces while preserving the original artwork.

“KLCB was excited to move this project forward and engage youth within our community who can play a vital role in creating beautification projects and assist in sustainability efforts throughout the city,” said Amelia Corrales, Keep Las Cruces Beautiful Coordinator. “Our goal was to beautify this highly utilized trail and show our community that by coming together we can collaborate with over 75 youth and six different programs to create a beautiful design in an area of our city in which the entire community can view and be proud of for years to come.”

But this project isn’t just about restoration. It’s about celebrating the essence of New Mexico. Inside, the mural will feature state symbols like the State bird, insect, mammal, and more, along with the iconic Gila Cliff Dwellings. On the outside, it’s all about Las Cruces – from its founding to its vibrant culture, showcased through symbols like chilies, pecan trees, and the Rio Grande River.

Under the guidance of artist Breanna Yazzie, KLCB staff, and volunteers are hard at work bringing this vision to life. With youth from various community programs lending their energy and creativity, the mural promises to be a true reflection of community spirit.

As the project progresses, KLCB remains committed to its long-term maintenance. Plans are in place to ensure the mural’s enduring beauty, with partnerships in the works to document materials used and keep the artwork vibrant for years to come.

Named “A Walk Through New Mexico,” this project stands as a symbol of unity and pride for the community. Keep America Beautiful applauds KLCB and its partners for their dedication, eagerly anticipating the completion of this remarkable endeavor.

Grant funding for this project was provided by YCC and the New Mexico Clean and Beautiful program.
