Keep Indianapolis Beautiful takes advantage of closed highway with cleanup event.

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) partnered with the Indiana Department of Transportation for the I-65 Closure Cleanup Adventure — a community highway cleanup that took place during a recent planned closure of I-65 for construction. The event was created to raise awareness of keeping highways and roadways litter-free all through a unique experience – cleaning up right on a local highway!

More than 50 volunteers participated in the event, including people from around the area, as well as local companies and a group from the Indianapolis chapter of the Nature Conservancy. The volunteers cleaned roadway shoulders and the surrounding grassy areas.

KIB said it awarded small prizes for the oddest and most interesting litter finds.

“The strangest [was] an intact, though slightly bent wrought iron chair,” said Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Volunteer Coordinator Cathy Mangan Jackson.

Following the cleanup, volunteers enjoyed popsicles donated by Indianapolis-based ice cream business Nicey Treat.
